The documentary
Good News: How Hospitals Heal Themselves (57 min.) reports how pioneering hospitals are using Dr. Deming’s theory to create an environment where health workers can dramatically improve patient care and reduce unnecessary deaths, suffering, errors, infections and costs without additional resources or government regulations.
Doctors and nurses tell how they did their best, working overtime, while hospital conditions worsened. They were delighted to learn systems thinking to practice continual improvement in work design and outcomes and increase on-the-job satisfaction.
In the companion book,
The Nun and the Bureaucrat How They Found an Unlikely Cure for America’s Sick Hospitals, health workers explain in detail how they saved lives and reduced errors, infections and waste by using Toyota management principles. They explain that at first they did not believe the new improvement culture would work, but to their surprise they found it freed them to practice medicine more effectively and to interact with patients more.
The documentary and its companion book and discussion guide make an excellent introduction of systems thinking and its benefits to any audience.
