The Deming Library has become the cornerstone of our transformation process.
The learners are asked to agree to eight sessions of 2-3 hours duration before deciding if they want to engage in coaching to apply the Deming/Shewhart principles to their business. Each session begins with a video after establishing the overall aim and objective for the session.
The method of using the videos has evolved. It drives interesting discussion that causes the necessary wrestling (like a butterfly in chrysalis) that facilitates growth toward transformation. We ask each participant to note any questions, comments, agreements, and disagreements. We then write all of these on a chart pad, group the like ones and use nominal group technique to rank the order of discussion. Some participants have fallen out during the process, but the survivors have an excellent base for coaching.

In the Department of the Navy the Deming Library was an invaluable
resource, bringing some of the finest minds available to bear on universal
problems of leadership. It was like having a window into a top-flight think tank
focused on quality. The one I used more than any other was "the Funnel
Experiment." Through Dr. Deming's explanation of the funnel, the explanatory
clips of his seminars, and the discussion with people like Brian Joiner, Gypsie
Ranney and Heero Haqueboord, I was able to create "Aha" moments for a lot of
experienced leaders. I can't imagine teaching the theory of variation without
it--it was as vital a part of our variation training as the Red Bead Experiment.
